Nature, conservation & the environment

Practical Tips

Our natural environment is something we often take for granted, and only when it is too late do we mourn its loss. We depend on nature in obvious ways - such as the insects that pollinate our fruit and veg and the microbes that nurture the soil that our crops depend on - but there are many complex ways that are part of the web of life.

In a time of Covid19, we have all learned to appreciate it even more than we did before.

A few practical tips:

  • Join the wonderful Nailsworth In Bloom team to help keep the town beautiful

  • Keep a Bee Friendly garden and get recognition for doing so

  • Grow some fruit and veg, as a householder, or in an allotment, or as part of a community scheme. Look out for Open Edible Gardens.

  • Support the locally grown veg, such as the WI and Town Market

  • Keep an area of your garden wild, with a stack of logs, nettles, rocks, and maybe a small pond. Maybe keep a corner of the lawn for wild flowers.

  • Work with neighbours to ensure safe passage for the creatures we love like hedgehogs, and corridors for nature in general.

  • As we enjoy the green spaces and woodland around us, we can all do our bit to protect it.

We have been gathering ideas on more significant changes that can be made in this area, so please visit the corresponding Projects/Nature page to understand more about what people are proposing.
